Highway 12 in this region takes you through part of this \u00a0Missouri River watershed. \u00a0The town of Niobrara is located where the Niobrara River flows into the Missouri. \u00a0Wetlands surrounding the town contain buildings, vehicles and other items left to retire &#8211; some after flooding.<\/p>\n<h2>Verdel, Nebraska<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/4x5Nebraska-2-of-4-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-506\" src=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/4x5Nebraska-2-of-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1566\" incorporated very early in the 1900&#8217;s as the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad extended it&#8217;s line west into northern Nebraska. \u00a0Verdel&#8217;s population skyrocketed to 140 in the 1910 census &#8211; obviously calling for a jail, like any large Nebraska town of that era. \u00a0 Today, 30 residents remain in this town on Nebraska Hwy 12.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/4x5Nebraska-3-of-4-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-507\" src=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/4x5Nebraska-3-of-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1580\" area hasn&#8217;t been the same since the Dew Drop Inn was demolished after being flooded in 2011. \u00a0Homes and other buildings in town have been &#8220;let be&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>Monowi, Nebraska &#8211; population 1<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-1-of-23-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-519\" src=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-1-of-23-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1367\" made up of one inhabitant, Elsie, who is mayor, librarian, and bartender at the Monowi Tavern.<\/p>\n<h2>Near Dunning, Nebraska &#8211; The Sandhills<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-24-of-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-542\" src=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-24-of-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1367\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-24-of-1-1.jpg 2048w, http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-24-of-1-1-300x200.jpg to the central region of Nebraska, you&#8217;ll see more of these old buildings along the highway. \u00a0I&#8217;m grateful that there&#8217;s nobody in any great hurry to take these structures down.<\/p>\n<h2>The Sandhills &#8211; Ranching on Grass-Topped Sand Dunes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-5-of-23-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Nebraska the night of the 18th with almost 1,000 miles into the trip. \u00a0The Outer Limits Tavern is just north and west of Sidney. \u00a0I opened up a couple of Hamm&#8217;s in the parking lot &#8211; it was past bar-time at the Outer Limits.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Saturday, August 19th &#8211; Sterling, Colorado<a href=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-7-of-23-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-525\" src=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-7-of-23-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1385\" south of the Nebraska border and offered an available hotel for two nights. \u00a0Sterling had a Western Sugar production and distribution facility that has been abandoned. \u00a0Strangely, the Nebraska<\/h2>\n<p>I had originally planned to view the eclipse in the Sandhill region outside a small town call Tryon. \u00a0The weather forecast was dicey, so late in the week I decided to drive west and view the eclipse at Alliance &#8211; directly on the center of the line of totality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ericksonphotography.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Nebraska-12-of-23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-462\" only 1 or 2 miles of Interstate up to this point of the trip. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t going to give into the temptation of 80 mph speed limits on South Dakota freeways. \u00a0I&#8217;m glad I found my Casey&#8217;s Gas Stations. \u00a0My plan was to get on Hwy 18 as soon as I could after spending a day at the Snake River Recreation Area in South Dakota. \u00a0I&#8217;ve never traversed Iowa on Hwy 18 and I thought the change would be good. \u00a0 I drove through places in Iowa like Dicken&#8217;s Pit, Road&#8217;s End Prairie, and Monona. \u00a0Much better. \u00a0I found more abandonment citizens who were wondering what I was doing, especially when I was using my 4 x 5 view camera or drone. \u00a0The locals I met in Nebraska and South Dakota were warm, generous, and curious people. \u00a0 But, I noticed one thing common to Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa that puzzles me&#8230;.rural towns seem to survive with just a Dollar General store and a Subway restaurant. \u00a0I&#8217;ve
